A few years back, a little gem of a restaurant opened up on a quiet corner in downtown Richmond, VA. Jay, one of the owners of Saison, has since revived a small piece of Historic Jackson Ward where the unique and delicious menu has quickly become a draw for any self proclaimed foodie and bar scene enthusiast. Local fare and craft cocktails fill the intimate spot’s menus and so naturally it became a place I came to adore and frequent often. It was the place that I met Jay and Courtney. These two friends fell in love over a shared appreciation for all the good things in life – food, drink, travel, dancing… the list goes on. When I heard that they were planning a destination wedding, I knew it would be nothing but laid back and lighthearted with a heavy emphasis on family and friends. Quite possibly, the most perfect combination for any wedding and the most spot on representation of the happy couple. Everyone that Jay and Courtney held close in their hearts traveled to the tiny island off of Mexico’s shore to witness them say ‘I do.’ The weekend getaway started with one of the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen from the gorgeous beaches of Isla Mejeres. The festivities continued with authentic cuisine, lots of rum and too much sun. My favorite part of the entire celebration was when Jay turned around to see Courtney walk toward him. #AllTheFeels right there! I didn’t think anything else could top the emotion from the start of the ceremony, until their siblings read the love letters that they wrote to each other out loud. It was one of the most sincere moments I have ever witnessed while photographing a wedding. The entire weekend was infused with the spirit of Courtney and Jay and I’d have to say that the running theme was ‘Lay Back’… lay back and put your feet up, lay back and enjoy the sun on your face, lay back and fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean, lay back and allow copious amounts of rum to be poured down your throat. Yep, it was a celebration indeed. Enjoy some of my favorites from their amazing weekend!
